Different Kinds Of Gardens

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When it comes to flowers, gardening , and plants the rule applies.

I love the beauty and smell of natural flowers and plants, but I also see the beauty in a artificial garden and flowers if it is well landscaped or arranged.

They are less maintenance and there beauty does not wilt nor are they eaten by insects. I wonder if you can mix the two and create something beautiful? Think about it.

Simple Care Of Cut Flowers

Receiving a basket or bouquet of flowers is a very nice feeling. It lets you know that someone cares and is thinking of you. Now the question is "how do you care for your floral basket or your bouquet? The best way is to know what types of flowers you have received, since each flower is different.

However, if you can not identify the flowers, follow a general rule of watering your floral basket every 3-4 days. Make sure you feel soil. to prevent drowning them. Those in a vase, change the water every 2-3 days, cutting the stems a little at a slant. Hopefully this technique will keep your flowers longer.

Cutting Fresh Flowers

How beautiful is a bouquet of fresh cut flowers with different colors and types. It gives the house a sense of beauty and peace. Do you know why people tell you to always cut the bottom of the stem at a diagonal and not straight across?

The reason, I found out, is to expose more stem area so that the flower can suck in more water and stay fresh and alive longer. You probably say "everyone knows that". Not true. How many persons have you seen reach for a knife or scissor and cut straight across the stem of the flower?

I was one of them until now. Now I am very careful of how I care for my fresh flowers. Also remember to cut with a very sharp knife or scissor to avoid hurting the stem.

Gift Cards Hidden Fees

Do you enjoy giving gift cards from florists or major credit cards? Be very careful and tell the recipients to use the card as soon as possible. Reason being that there might be hidden charges for balances on the card after the time limit. I was not aware of this until a friend told me that Visa was charging $2.50 per month for a balance on her gift card.

I thought she was joking until I read the fine print on the back of the card and I mean fine print. I had to use a magnifying glass to read it. So please make it a habit to read all the fine print. You will be surprise at hidden fees charged.

Spanish Moss And Trees

Do you have Spanish Moss on your trees? I do and I hate it. Spanish Moss is a non-parasitic plant or herb that uses trees as a host to grow but does not rub the tree of its nutrients, according to the University of Florida.

Question: If they do not rub the trees of their food, what is destroying my beautiful trees? Indirectly the moss is killing them. They are so prolific that they actually suffocate the leaves causing them to die.

The moss also increases the weight on the branches causing them to break and die. It seems that even, if some how you can get rid of the moss, it has the potential of coming back. The culprit is the wind. Do you get the feeling that you are fighting a losing battle?

Gulf Of Mexico Reefs In Peril From Oil Spill

The oil spill continues to create havoc. This time it is menacing the Coral and Oyster reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. The reefs extend from Stuart, in the Atlantic Ocean, to the Dry Tortugas, which are located west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. Everyone knows how fragile the Coral and Oyster reefs are.

The question is how can they be protected from that crude oil? Also, once destroyed, can they be restored to it beauty, since the Coral Reef is a living organism, as well as the Oyster Reef?

I keep praying that oil spill problem can be resolved very soon. We are losing millions of gallons of crude oil a day and the environmental destruction is beyond belief. Keep praying a miracle happens

Sprouting Of Seeds

How is your planting coming along? We finally got the seeds of the gandules planted. We thought that it would take a long time for the seeds to sprout, but 8 of the 10 seeds we planted sprouted in three days. We are so pleased. This means that if we can keep the fragile twigs ( I call them that because they are so thin and fragile looking), we will have a harvest of gandules or pigeon peas next year.

We hope that your efforts at planting whatever seed you like gives you joy. Remember, they are fragile and need more attention than the established trees or vegetables. Not all seeds sprout so fast, so depending on what you are planting will depend the length of time for sprouting.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is coming and for many, it's a day of remembering loved ones, who have fought and given their lives for our country, and sending flowers & wreaths. It is also a time to remember those who, though did not die, but did leave behind parts of themselves in whatever war they fought. It is also a time to remember those soldiers in the hospitals fighting to make sense of their torn up lives.

I some times wonder which is worse, dying swiftly or dying piece by piece in a hospital where most of the time there are no answers to your questions. Some people wonder does Hell exist? Ask one of the wounded in the hospitals, whose wound, whether physical or mental, whether Hell exists. They will probably say " I am in it.

War is Hell!

Flowers For Mother's Day

Mother' Day is one day away. I have given up trying to guess what my mother would like, according to her she does not need any thing. This is the answer I get every year, including Christmas, and her birthday.

So I finally decided that I would not try and second guess her. Now I give her cash or check with a beautiful bouquet of flowers or roses. This combination, for me, works great. Who does not like flowers? Money is always welcomed and they can buy whatever tickles their fancy.

Flowers In A Room

Flowers, especially Roses in my opinion, brightens up a room, more so if that room is in a hospital with someone you love. Life is taken for granted by most of us,and only when you find yourself in a quiet hospital waiting room waiting for the doctor to come and tell you that everything is alright.

When you hear those words, a new world opens up and a sigh of relief is exhaled. The first thing you go buy is a beautiful bouquet of flowers, roses, to say thank God you are okay, and I love you.

Planting Cactus Indoors

Are you like me who sometimes think that our flowers or plants are self sufficient? Then I have a suggestion for an indoor plant that is interesting looking and almost self sufficient. The plant is the Cactus.

I know everyone associates the Cactus with the desert but it also can be planted in doors. You need to establish good drainage and use a mix made out of equal parts of medium coarse river, not beach, sand, garden loam, and leaf mold or humus.

When you finish planting the Cactus add some gravel on top. It helps water penetration, decreases evaporation, and stops a crust from forming on top.

Tips for Indoor Planting

Love flowers & Plants and want them for indoors? Try to avoid impulse buying. When you look at a flower or plant for indoors, consider the environment in the house or apartment: drafty areas, shaded corners and the amount of light in the area.
This will increase the life of your plants & flowers.

The more consideration you give to the space, the better your choice of flowers or plants will be. Also remember that their watering needs will be different. Good luck with your planting.

What to Get Mama

Mother"s Day is a few days away, and everyone is preparing for the gathering at mama's. I am sure you are thinking of what to get her. I know I am. The list goes from perfume, a trip, money, and flowers or a combination of all of the above mentioned.

I usually go for a combination of flowers and one more thing. I know I am giving her a bouquet of flowers, but I have yet to decide on the other. I better make up my mind. Time is running short. Good luck to all.

Roses

Love roses? this is the time to buy the award winning roses. Look in all the stores that have a gardening department. Please make sure that you read the planting instructions that come with them.
Remember that they need good exposure to the sun as well as some shade during the day, so really look at the area you are considering for planting.

Rainy Weather

How is the weather where you are? Here in New Port Richey. Fl., it seems as if the heavens have opened up. The day started off great, then for the last 5 hours it has been a down pour.

So much so that we have been trapped in doors for that length of time and now the thundering has appeared. The water is great for the flowers and plants, but unless you want a good soaking, we will stay indoors at my sister's until it subsides a little. I hope it is soon.

It seems that the weather is bad all over. The T.V news said that a tornado in Alabama and Mississippi took the lives of 3 children. Climate Change?

The Unique Beauty of a Lily

Lilies come in different colors, shapes and sizes. The most common color,I think, is white. They also come in yellow, pink, red and combination of colors, but today I saw one of the most beautiful lily I have ever seen. It was in my sister's front yard.

The size of the flower is like a dessert dish, its color is like a burnt burgendy, if there is such a color. It is said "a picture is worth a thousand words",but no camera. You see these flowers and you wonder how can there be such beauty around us, when the environment is being destroyed?

Keep looking for beauty, you will find it in the most uncommon places.

Pruning Shrubs

Wondering about when to prune your shrubs? Shrubs should be pruned a little every year,to avoid having to do a very aggressive prune.
Also shrubs that bear flowers should be pruned after flowering, and shrubs that flower in the summer should be pruned in early spring.

Favorite Flower

What is your favorite flower? When I tried to name my favorite flower, I could not decide between the rose, tulip or carnations. So I told my husband to give me a bouquet that contained all 3, plus baby breaths, and some greenery.
Whatever the florist makes it will be beautiful and I will love it. I really wanted more flowers, but I settled on those three. I was driving him crazy. Why the fuss? Our anniversary is coming soon and he wants to be ahead of the game when he orders the bouquet

Preventing Weeds

Working on your garden and feeling that the weeds are taking over? Join the club. My sister spend money on having a landscaper put plastic all over her yard to try and prevent weeds from growing, guess what, they broke the plastic. so much for that theory.
One thing you can try is using wet torn newspapers. Put the newspapers around the plant, add the food, then wet it and over lap the paper around the plant.cover with mulch and forget about them

Natural Flowers

I was speaking to my sister about nothing in particular, and out of the clear blue sky she asks me " What is the difference between artificial flowers and live ones, beside the obvious?
The biggest difference is that the artificial ones last for ever. Besides that, the live flowers have it over the artificial ones, with their natural beauty, their perfume, and their texture. A bouquet of natural flowers is a beautiful gift.

Body Mechanics and Garedening

How is your planting doing and how are your flowers and plants blossoming?  Ours are doing just great. I was looking out my window  and I saw a gentleman bending over trying to weed manually. I said to myself,  there goes his back.

Please remember to use good body mechanics. It will save you a lot of back pain. Do not bend from your waist down, but squat down.
Use your leg and thigh muscles to sustain your body weight. Better still, get a small stool and sit in it while you dig. You will be glad you did.
