What to Get Mama

Mother"s Day is a few days away, and everyone is preparing for the gathering at mama's. I am sure you are thinking of what to get her. I know I am. The list goes from perfume, a trip, money, and flowers or a combination of all of the above mentioned.

I usually go for a combination of flowers and one more thing. I know I am giving her a bouquet of flowers, but I have yet to decide on the other. I better make up my mind. Time is running short. Good luck to all.

Roses

Love roses? this is the time to buy the award winning roses. Look in all the stores that have a gardening department. Please make sure that you read the planting instructions that come with them.
Remember that they need good exposure to the sun as well as some shade during the day, so really look at the area you are considering for planting.

Rainy Weather

How is the weather where you are? Here in New Port Richey. Fl., it seems as if the heavens have opened up. The day started off great, then for the last 5 hours it has been a down pour.

So much so that we have been trapped in doors for that length of time and now the thundering has appeared. The water is great for the flowers and plants, but unless you want a good soaking, we will stay indoors at my sister's until it subsides a little. I hope it is soon.

It seems that the weather is bad all over. The T.V news said that a tornado in Alabama and Mississippi took the lives of 3 children. Climate Change?

The Unique Beauty of a Lily

Lilies come in different colors, shapes and sizes. The most common color,I think, is white. They also come in yellow, pink,red and combination of colors, but today I saw one of the most beautiful lily I have ever seen. It was in my sister's front yard.

The size of the flower is like a dessert dish, its color is like a burnt burgendy, if there is such a color. It is said "a picture is worth a thousand words",but no camera. You see these flowers and you wonder how can there be such beauty around us, when the environment is being destroyed?

Keep looking for beauty, you will find it in the most uncommon places.

Magnolia Tree

Do you have trees that blossom? I have a few, but the one that never ceases to amaze me is the Magnolia tree. Its flower seeds look like acorns,but the flower it gives is simply gorgeous. Its petals are white, large and beautiful.It is simply a beautiful tree.

Pruning Shrubs

Wondering about when to prune your shrubs? Shrubs should be pruned a little every year,to avoid having to do a very aggressive prune.
Also shrubs that bear flowers should be pruned after flowering, and shrubs that flower in the summer should be pruned in early spring.

Favorite Flower

What is your favorite flower? When I tried to name my favorite flower, I could not decide between the rose, tulip or carnations. So I told my husband to give me a bouquet that contained all 3, plus baby breaths, and some greenery.
Whatever the florist makes it will be beautiful and I will love it. I really wanted more flowers, but I settled on those three. I was driving him crazy. Why the fuss? Our anniversary is coming soon and he wants to be ahead of the game when he orders the bouquet

Preventing Weeds

Working on your garden and feeling that the weeds are taking over? Join the club. My sister spend money on having a landscaper put plastic all over her yard to try and prevent weeds from growing, guess what,they broke the plastic. so much for that theory.
One thing you can try is using wet torn newspapers. Put the newspapers around the plant, add the food,then wet it and over lap the paper around the plant.cover with mulch and forget about them

Pollen and Allergies

Allergies driving you crazy and the pollen count just won"t come down? Patience, it will go away.,I am told. I cannot wait to go outside, but every time I try to work with my flowers and plants,

I run inside sneezing and with a runny nose., even with the medications, I still  get horrible attacks .The doctor's answer  to me is:  stay indoors until the pollen count comes down.  Hope things are better with you.

I was speaking to my sister about nothing in particular, and out of the clear blue sky she asks me " What is the difference between artificial flowers and live ones,beside the obvious?
  The biggest difference is that the artificial ones last for ever. Besides that, the live flowers have it over the artificial ones, with their natural beauty, their perfume, and their texture. A bouquet of natural flowers is a beautiful gift.

How is your planting doing and how are your flowers and plants blossoming?  Ours are doing just great. I was looking out my window  and I saw a gentleman bending over trying to weed manually. I said to myself,  there goes his back.

  Please remember to use good body mechanics. It will save you a lot of back pain. Do not bend from your waist down,but squat down.
Use your leg and thigh muscles to sustain your body weight. Better still, get a small stool and sit in it while you dig. You will be glad you did.
